CHEVY TRUCK TAIL GATES - HINGES AND GUTS
3/9/03
Updated 5/19/17
These are the 3 screws that hold the tailgate handle on. They are on the bed side of the tailgate.
Here's a handle I cut out of a tailgate, for a better look. I'm using the sheet metal for another project. You can see there are 3 pivot points, that should be lubed. The two on the sides, have nylon bushings.
The center one, is a large headed rivet, more difficult to lube. White Lithium spray grease with the tube, gets it pretty good. You can see the rod ends. They snap into the retaining clips, and are quite difficult to get out. I snapped one of these rods, when trying to pry one out. The retaining clip was a rusted glob, on the end of the rod. There is no spring on the handle itself, only on the latches.
These are the handle to latch rods. The latch end gets twisted through the hole in the end of the striker, which holds it in, and the handle end is held by a retaining clip. The latch end of the rod is dipped in plastic, to stop vibration, to act as a bushing, and prevent rust. The foam block is to help stop rattles.
Spraying the inside of the tailgate with Fluid Film will go a long way in preventing this kind of rust damage.
